Warts
Small, fleshy, grainy bumps caused by a viral infection of the top layer of skin By Dr. Rabia ImranOverview
Warts are small, noncancerous growths that appear on the skin. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can occur on any part of the body. Warts are generally harmless and can resolve on their own, but they may persist or spread in some cases.
Symptoms
The main symptom of warts is the presence of small, rough growths on the skin. Warts may vary in size, shape, and color. Common types of warts include common warts, plantar warts (on the feet), flat warts, and genital warts. Warts can sometimes cause discomfort or pain, especially if they appear on weight-bearing areas or are subjected to friction.
Causes
Warts are caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the body through small cuts or breaks in the skin. Factors that increase the risk of developing warts include:
- Direct contact: Touching surfaces or objects that have been in contact with the virus.
- Weakened immune system: Individuals with a weakened immune system are more susceptible to HPV infection and the development of warts.
- Warm and moist environments: Warts thrive in warm and moist environments, such as swimming pools or communal showers.
Treatment
Warts can often resolve on their own without treatment. However, if warts are bothersome, persist, or spread, treatment options may be considered. Treatment methods for warts include:
- Topical medications: Over-the-counter or prescription creams, gels, or ointments containing salicylic acid or other chemicals can be applied directly to the warts to help remove them.
- Cryotherapy: Freezing the warts with liquid nitrogen to destroy the affected tissue.
- Electrosurgery: Burning the warts with an electric current to remove them.
- Surgical removal: In some cases, warts may be surgically excised or removed with laser therapy.
Self-Care
In addition to medical treatment, self-care practices can help manage warts and prevent their spread:
- Avoid picking or scratching: Picking at warts can cause them to spread or lead to secondary infections.
- Keep the area clean and dry: Regularly clean the area around the warts and keep it dry to discourage their growth.
- Avoid sharing personal items: To prevent the spread of warts, avoid sharing towels, clothing, or other personal items with individuals who have warts.
